One Thousand White Onions
In 2006 Menzies Inc launched the publication of the book ‘One Thousand White Onions – a history of caring for children since 1865′ that details the history of the organisation that commenced in Melbourne in 1865. The book details early care organisations in Melbourne caring for children. It tells of the Melbourne Home (cnr Latrobe & Exhibition Streets), how the organisation was financed then and the move to Frankston in 1901. The book details the operations, difficulties and highlights of the organisation’s 143 years of existence under the names of The Melbourne Ragged Boys’ Home, The Minton Boys’ Home, the Menzies Homes for Boys and The Menzies Homes for Children, highlighting the current services of Menzies Inc.
This 180 page book is richly illustrated with many photos never previously published. It contains reminiscences of “old boys” as well as contributions from previous Directors of The Menzies Homes for Children. The foreword is by Associate Professor Dorothy Scott OAM. It contains an index as well as a listing of some names of children who were cared for by the organisation since the nineteenth century.
